_MG_7819-2_RundleAcademyGreetings Rundle Academy Students, Parents and Community.  I’m Karen Goepen-Wee, a teacher here at Rundle Academy, and I am the curator of TEDxRundleAcademy.

A little over a year ago, after attending TEDActive 2014, the simulcast conference of the official TED conference,  I came back to Rundle Academy with a crazy idea: wouldn’t it be amazing to have our very own TEDx event that highlighted the ideas and passions of the students here at this school?

TEDx events are independently organized TED-like, multidisciplinary events featuring short talks that seeks to highlight the unique passions, ideas, challenges, hopes, and dreams of a specific place or community.  If you would like to see one of the best, most popular TED Talks of all time, take a few minutes to view the following video.  Sir Ken Robinson’s talk is truly a great introduction to what a TED talk is like.

So, where better to have a TEDx event, than in a school?  Especially a school that celebrates and supports diverse learners and their needs.

On Saturday, May 23, 2015, I am pleased to announce that  TEDxRundleAcademy’s inaugural event will take place in Rundle Academy’s Fine Arts Centre. This 4 hour event is the culmination of a truly remarkable exercise in collaborative creativity and it  is this collaboration that is the hallmark of a TEDx event. My vision, in bringing a TEDx event to Rundle Academy, was to celebrate the ideas worth sharing that come primarily from our student body, but also are reflective of our greater community: parents, alumni members, and educators who truly try to make a difference in the lives of students.

Our program is diverse, eclectic and homegrown. We seek to educate, entertain and provoke conversations that will continue long after our event is over; conversations about diversity and how we can continue to promote it for years to come not only within our own school community, but in the greater Rundle Academy community.

What is TEDx?

TEDxRundleAcademy1So many of you have probably wrapped your heads around TED.  After all, the TED organization has a number of flagship events every year: The annual TED conference held in Vancouver every spring, TEDWomen, TEDGlobal, and TEDYouth, but the TED organization recognizes  that people with great stories, people with “ideas worth spreading”, people willing and able to  find those ideas and people in their communities  are everywhere.  Therefore, in 2009, TED launched the TEDx program whereby anybody could apply for a TEDx licence and hold a TED like event in their own community

Some recent  stats about TEDx that might interest you:

To date:

  • 53,000 TEDxTalks on the TEDxTalks YouTube channel
  • 480 million views of the TEDxTalks on the YouTube channel
  • 12, 262 events have happened around the world
  • 2, 715 cities around the world have hosted one or more TEDx event

TEDx events are slowly becoming part of the fabric of communities around the world.  It’s also good to know that approximately 40% of those events are small, like TEDxRundleAcademy.  The following video offers up a great introduction to TEDx events in all of the variety around the world. Enjoy!

Welcome to the official website for TEDxRundleAcademy! We are vibrant and family-friendly youth event that celebrates the voices and ideas worth sharing of both the students at Rundle Academy and the members of our larger community. This year, we are exploring the theme: Diversity=Us.  This theme enables us to showcase a wide variety of ideas, speakers and performers. Our speakers and performers range in age from 12-18, and we also have a number of adults speakers who bring wisdom and insights that will appeal both to parents and students alike.

In 38 days, our inaugural event will take place in our Fine Arts Centre on Saturday, May 23, 2015 from 9:00am -1:00pm. Attendance is by invitation only, but the entire event will be shared with our community approximately 6-8 weeks after the event on the official TEDxYouTube Channel.

For those of you who are curious, TED is an annual event where some of the world’s leading thinkers and doers are invited to share what they are most passionate about. “TED” stands for Technology, Entertainment, Design — three broad subject areas that are, collectively, shaping our future. And in fact, the event is broader still, showcasing ideas that matter in any discipline.

In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x=independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.TEDx RundleAcademy is operated under license from TED.
